This collection includes copies of the letters sent by KVFD; 5000 return letters received at the station from the service personnel; scripts used in the radio broadcasts; photographs, sketches, printed materials, propaganda, and other memorabilia received with the letters; and transcripts of oral history interviews conducted by Roger Naatte with KVFD station personnel Edward Breen and Drexel Peterson (June 26, 1974). The bulk of the collection consists of letters sent and received during World War II. The letters describe the transition from civilian to military life; boot camp experiences; living conditions on board ships and battlefields; contacts with friends and fellow soldiers; etc.

In 1943 Fort Dodge radio station KVFD launched the Your Letter from Home project based on a similar project begun by a radio station in Montgomery, Alabama. Station staff composed letters with news of home and fellow soldiers for service men and women from Fort Dodge, Webster County and various other northwest Iowa locales. Edward G. Breen was born on June 10, 1908, to John and Katherine Breen. His father was manager of the Philips House Hotel in downtown Dayton, and Edward was born in a room there. Edward earned a bachelor's degree from University of Dayton, then went on to continue his studies at the Ohio State University.
